Using a Business Intelligence Roadmap for Project Planning

Project planning is easier when an organization has business intelligence. The scope of business intelligence is broad; it involves the skills, applications, technologies, strategies, and practices that support decision making.

Having a good business intelligence roadmap is probably the best way to set up a data intelligence management system within a business. A business intelligence (BI) roadmap is the comprehensive framework or visual guide that presents how to setup a BI system. By using a BI roadmap, an organization will be guided through the difficult process of setting up a system that gathers and organizes the data in your company and makes it into something useful for your top decision makers.

Effective decision making is important when planning for a project. One of the extensive and critical parts of implementing a project is planning because it requires a lot of decision making. In this stage of project implementation the methods, tools, and strategies should be determined. Determining which business intelligence strategies, methods, and tool should be used is extremely difficult (remember professionals get paid to make these tough decisions). A wrong decision made in project planning could result in a very negative outcome. If this happens, the organizations need to go back in the first process of project implementation to correct the mistake.

The first step when implementing a BI system is justification, wherein an assessment is made to know whether the project is worthwhile. Project planning is the second step. In project planning, strategic plans should be made and developed. The organization will decide on what appropriate tools, methods, and strategies should be used in the accomplishment of the project. Detailed analysis of the business problem or business opportunity will be done in the planning stage. This business analysis offers an understanding of the business needs in order to formulate BI solutions.  Design is the next step, when the product needs a design. This designed product is created to solve the problem or enable business opportunities. In the construction stage, the designed product is built to provide a return on investment within a range of time. The last step is deployment, where the finished product is sold, and its effectiveness will be measured. In this stage, the outcome of the project will be evaluated.

When a business intelligence roadmap serves as a guide for an organization, the process of their project implementation will be much more organized.  If your organization wants to have an effective BI system in place, then it will need to work with experts to form a good roadmap that will lead you to success.
