First order of business: if you are expecting this to be an article about the generic Canadian alterna-goth band with the almost identical name, check to make sure you didn’t omit an all-important “THE” at the beginning of your Google search. What we are dealing with here is the trashy, blood-curdling psychedelic noise machine that hails from the land of Natty Boh and cheap homicide (that’s Baltimore, for those of you lucky enough to have never been there).

Two years ago, as the co-host of a d.i.y. venue in Philadelphia, I found myself serving warm beers and soggy tofu to some very agreeable gents from Argentina. This was my first encounter with Boom Boom Kid and his band. They seemed to be a rather mild-mannered bunch, but that quiet persona was shed in the frenzy which ensued from the moment they took the stage.

Piercing, regal, smooth, sharp - talented. Joanna Newsom is likely to be unlike anything you have ever heard. A master of the harp, Joanna Newsom’s melodies flow as smooth as silk and epitomizes what it means to have a welcoming sound.
Her vocals however, are anything but smooth and welcoming. The best way to describe listening to Joanna Newsom sing would be to imagine hearing something in between the shriek of a freshly stepped on dog and the red-haired woman who answers phones in Office Space.

When someone finds out you are from Buffalo, there is a good chance they will make some remark about the famously cold winters and question why you live there. While the winters in Buffalo can sometimes become unbearable, it gives us an excuse to stay inside and work on creative endeavors.
