Screaming Females @ Ronny’s in Chicago October 7, 2008

Kristen and I went to the merch table before they started playing to find a zine filled with raw and real doom and gloom illustrations with real issues with fiery outcomes. It depicted the rapist getting paid for his murderous deeds in an eternity of hellish pain. This started up interest enough for the both of us and we went straight up to the front. Within 30 seconds of their first song the room was packed and half of us were dancing. Marissa’s voice is powerful in all the best ways. King Mike and Jarrett deliver solid rock for Marissa’s “would make Stephen Malkmus blush” guitar mastery.

Marissa uses pedals to create amazingly noisy breaks. She smartly goes from harsh noise using a drumstick to playing the most solid leads I’ve seen. I’m not just saying. This is for real.

My favorite parts of the show was when Marissa said, “I’m ready…” in a bored tone to get the song started, but not in a cute way, it was way cool. It’s so refreshing to see a band with such creative music, a good look and lyrics comparing to my favorite personal zines.

Kristen bought “what if someone is watching their t.v.?” Listening to this cd today is bringing me hope for the future. When there is corruption everywhere else I know I’m safe surfing from couch to couch with good music to listen to. The Screaming Females are right on.
